Aurobindo was a great spiritual person and his poetry is full of mysticism. He took the story as a legend and symbol and put all his experience and yoga in his epic poem ‘Savitri’ which he himself regarded as his most important work. He has presented the theme of love through the character of Savitri. Savitri has been shown as a symbol of perfect and ideal wife. She possesses the power of divine love. Savitri, an epic poem in blank verse, is based upon the story of Mahabharata. Here Ghosh expresses his mystic experiences. It is a comprehensive, integrated and excellent cosmic poem having a range that is too vast. Savitri takes as its theme the life of human and the movement of once soul over a cosmic plane. The death of Satyavan is not simply the theme of Savitri rather it is the suffering, misery and the death. Satyavan's death symbolises the defeat of truth and the invasion of darkness. But Savitri equipped with the power of her love engages in an conflict with death and secures her husband.
Love and life (death) are the major theme upon which the whole epic of Savitri is based. Only ‘Savitri’ is the complete story where Love and Life both are established fully. In 'Savitri' this subject of love and death has been treated in a very philosophical manner, it reaches its highest height. The poet had tried to establish here that in this world nothing is impossible. Generally, it is quite impossible to get victory over death but Savitri proves that true and divine love can conquer the death. Death is a shadow of love. Love and death seems to possess two opposite principles, one presents the divine eternity and immortality, the other insists on the eternity of the mortality.
The description of the sudden meeting of Savitri and Satyavan sings the glory of love. The poet describes this meeting in detail as an example of spiritual love. This one moment of sacred meeting knit their hearts and make them forever for each other. Their union is the union of Prakriti and Purodha; and becomes a union of cosmic scale.
Savitri carries within herself the power of divine love. All true humans have this divine element in them. In the epic 'Savitri' love divine comes as the embodiment of Supreme grace to make man free from the darkness of ignorance of death. love is that embodiment of the eternity which carries with it the stamp of immortality. Savitri represents the victory of love over death. The debate between Savitri and lord of death is unique in itself. The conquest of love over death has been the dream of man from the dawn of his existence. Savitri fulfills this dream by defeating the lord of death, Yama.
In Savitri this subject of love and death has been treated in a very philosophical manner. It reaches its highest epitome. In this epic, divine love comes to make man free from the darkness of death. Savitri takes up the subject and brings the necessary condition to win over it. It affirms the necessity of the birth of a new power, the power of the divine grace of love, which alone can save man from the reign of ignorance of death.
The poetic portrait of Savitri has been so beautifully developed in the epic that she becomes the embodiment of love incarnate.
