Bholi is a female character in a chapter named 'Bholi' of the English textbook of Class-10. It is a story of the life and struggle of a simple girl Bholi. This story portrays that how the character of Bholi develops from being a simpleton to an educated individual over the course of time and under the proper guidance of her teacher. This story was written by an indian novelist, journalist and film director Khwaja Ahmad Abbas (K. A. Abbas).

    Q.1 Give the character Sketch of Bholi. (Or) Write the Character analysis of Bholi.

    AnswerBholi was a very simple and innocent girl. Her real name was Shulekha. Being a simple and very innocent child, she began to be called Bholi, means the simpleton. She was the fourth daughter of Ramlal who was the revenue official of the village (numberdar). 

    When Bholi was only ten months old, she got a head injury. It made a severe impact on her brain. Further, at the age of two years she had an attack of small-pox resulting into many dark spots and marks on all over her body. She did not speak till the age of five and when she spoke, she stammered. Other children made fun of her. Even she was looked down upon by her own family members.


    Bholi became very under-confident. But Bholi was not unfortunate at everything. She was lucky enough to have a good teacher who genuinely understood her condition. Her teacher treated her gently and with her support Bholi became confident and began acquiring knowledge and understanding. She was a hard working child and a dedicated learner. She never looked back and improved herself as she knew that her teacher is at her back for her. Even she stood up against the social evil.     Answer- Bholi's teacher was a very kind, tender hearted and a good person. When she for the first time asked Bholi about her name, Bholi stammered. Her teacher quickly understands Bholi's condition and encourages her. Even, Bholi herself wonders that she has never heard such a soothing voice. Bholi's parents had never talked to her like that. They always looked down upon her and neglected her.

    Bholi's teacher is an educated person, she knows how to behave with a person/ child who has different mental condition. She was the person who increased Bholi's intrest in books and learning. With her support and guidance, Bholi learnt to speak without any stammering. She became an educated person who can stand for her cause, as later in the story she refuses to marry an elder man against the wish of her parents. She learnt to speak very late at the age of five and used to stammer. Her face along with her whole body was covered with black pockmarks. Hence, her father was worried about her marriage prospects.

    Q.7 For what unusual reason is Bholi sent to school?

    AnswerAs Ramlal was a government official, any act done by him would present a precedence for the village. Hence, Tehsildar asked Ramlal to send his daughters to the new school in his village so that others can follow as well. That's why Bholi was sent to school just to satisfy the Tehsildar. Ramlal's wife did not want to send any of her daughters to school as it could affect their marriage prospects. However they thought that it would not be possible for Bholi, with her pock-marked face and dull brain, to get married anyway, so Bholi’s parents decided to send her to school to satisfy the Tehsildar.

    Q.8 Does Bholi enjoy her first day at school?

    Answer- Bholi was nurvous and afraid at first. She even started weeping when the teacher asked her name. She sat at a corner to remain unnoticed. 
    But, the beautiful pictures on the wall of classroom took her attention. The gentle, kind and tender behaviour of her teacher made her comfortable. She had a completely new experience in the class on her first day. Thus, although she was afraid of going to school initially, but by the time she went back home she had liked it. She started looking forward for her new life there.

    AnswerBholi had been a neglected child at home. She was always looked down upon. She was never bathed nor her clothes washed. The old torn clothes of her elder sisters were left for her to wear. Everyone made fun of her. But, her teacher was entirely different. Did understood the condition of Bholi. She genuinely tried to support her in her journey. Infact, the whole journey of Bholi from being a simpleton to an educated individual was made possible by her teacher. She encouraged her tenderly and provided her a gentle environment.     Answer- Bishamber was an elderly man quite same the age of Bholi's father. But Bholi’s parents accepted Bishamber’s marriage proposal because Bholi had pockmarks all over her body. They thought it would not be possible to marry her in natural circumstances. Apart from this, Bishamber was a well-to-do grocer and had not asked for any dowry.

    Q.11 Why does the marriage not take place ?

    Answer- When Bishamber shaw Bholi's face in between the marriage, he asked for a dowry of five thousand rupee because Bholi had pockmarks in her face. Ramlal had no choice but to pay. But, till that time Bholi had became an educated person. She refused to marry a greedy man. She stood for the dignity and respect of her family and herself. Thus the marriage did not take place.

    Q.12 Bholi had many apprehensions about going to school. What made her feel that she was going to a better place than her home?

    Answer- Bholi was never taken care of. But, the day she was going to school her parents were forced to dress her nicely. She was bathed, her hair was properly done and she was given a new dress to wear. Until then she was never bathed and  was given the old dresses of her sisters to wear. The special treatment she received made her feel that she was going to a better place.

    AnswerBholi stammered and was an innocent and introvert child in the beginning. Her teacher provided her kind treatment and encouraged her to have confidence. She increased her interests in the books and learning and taught her to read and write. No doubt, she made her an independent girl who was aware of her rights. Thus, she played a central role in changing her life.

Bholi real name Sulekha means ‘a person with a beautiful sense of letters’. In this story this word has a larger meaning of being an educated and literate individual. After her education, Bholi has really changed to Sulekha and her assertion at the time of her marriage is her announcement to the world that she is no more a Bholi, but is a Sulekha.
