1. What did Lencho hope for?

Answer: Lencho hoped for the rain to come as the only thing that his field of ripe corn needed was a good rain. Even a small shower would have been enough.

2. Why did Lencho say the raindrops were like ‘new coins’?
Answer: Lencho had worked quite hard. Now his crops were ready for harvest. A good shower would have resulted into a better harvest, consequently more prosperity. Hence, Lencho compared these raindrops with new coins.

3. How did the rain change? What happened to Lencho’s fields?
Answer: The rain was pouring down and Lencho was very happy. He even compared these raindrops with new coins. But suddenly, a strong wind began to blow. It was a hailstorm. Very large hailstones began to fall along with the rain.

When the hailstorm was over, it left a trail of destruction. All the crop in Lencho's fields was destroyed.

4. What were Lencho’s feelings when the hail stopped?
Answer: when the unfortunate hail stopped, Lencho was filled with sadness. All his crop was destroyed.  He was worried about the future of his family as there was no food for the coming year.

1. Who or what did Lencho have faith in? What did he do?

Answer: Lencho had firm belief in God. He believed that God see everything, even what is deep in one’s conscience. It was his consolidated faith that lead him to write a letter to God asking for a hundred pesos to sow his field again.

2. Who read the letter?

Answer: When Lencho wrote a letter to God and dropped it in the postbox, postmaster was surprised to see a letter to God. Thus he decided to open and read the letter.

3. What did the postmaster do then?
Answer: After seeing the letter to God, the Postmaster first laughed. But then he became serious. He was deeply impressed by Lencho's faith in God. He did not want to let his faith down. So he himself decided to collect the money and send it to Lencho.

1.Was Lencho surprised to find a letter for him with money in it?

AnswerNo. Lencho was a firm believer in God. He was not at all surprised to see the letter for him from God with the money inside it. He was quite confident about the reply from the God.

2. What made him angry?
Answer When Lencho had asked for a hundred pesos from God. But when he finished counting money, it was only seventy pesos. He was very confident that God can neither make a mistake nor deny his request. Hence, he came to conclusion that the post office employees must have taken the remaining thirty pesos. Therefore, he was angry.

NCERT Solutions: Thinking about the Text

1. Who does Lencho have complete faith in? Which sentences in the story tell you this? 
Answer Lencho had complete faith in God. These sentences in the story shows his firm faith in God:
  1. But in the hearts of all who lived in that solitary house in the middle of the valley, there was a single hope: help from God.
  2. All through the night, Lencho thought only of his one hope: the help of God, whose eyes, as he had been instructed, see everything, even what is deep in one’s conscience.
  3. “God,” he wrote, “if you don’t help me, my family and I will go hungry this year.”
  4. He wrote ‘To God’ on the envelope, put the letter inside and, still troubled, went to town.
  5. God could not have made a mistake, nor could he have denied Lencho what he had requested.
  6. It said: “God: of the money that I asked for, only seventy pesos reached me. Send me the rest, since I need it very much.”
2. Why does the postmaster send money to Lencho? Why does he sign the letter ‘God’?
Answer: Postmaster was deeply moved by Lencho’s firm faith in the God. He did not want to shake Lencho's faith, So, he himself decided to send money to Lencho. 

Further, he wanted Lencho to believe that letter was sent by the God, so, he signed the letter ‘God’. 

3. Did Lencho try to find out who had sent the money to him? Why/Why not?
AnswerNo, Lencho had completed faith in God. He believed that the money was sent by God. So, he does not try to find out who had sent the money to him. 

As Lencho's faith in God was very strong and he believed that God had sent him the money, there is no reason for him to find out who had sent him the money. He could not suspect about the existence of God.

4. Who does Lencho think has taken the rest of the money? What is the irony in the situation? [Remember that the irony of a situation is an unexpected aspect of it. An ironic situation is strange or amusing because it is the opposite of what is expected.]
Answer: Lencho thinks that the post office people have taken the rest of money. 
The irony in the situation is that Lencho blamed those people of taking his money who had actually helped him. It were the post office people who send the money to him. But, on the contrary, Lencho thinks they have stolen his money. He calls them crooks.
