Matilda was a beautiful young lady. She was married to a poor clerk. She always wanted to live a life like rich people; full of luxuries. But, she felt sorry about her economic and social status.

Matilda was a tactful lady. She convinced her husband to buy her a new dress for a party. And also she borrowed a necklace for a day. But, she lost that necklace  and this lead to extreme suffering and sorrow for Matilda and her husband. They had to live in poverty for almost ten years.

Matilda was of a showy nature. She aspired to look rich. She shew-off things that she didn't had. She loved the luxurious lives of rich women. And this envy of her presents detrimental consequences before her.

🏛️Introduction : Matilda :-

Matilda is a woman character in the story 'the necklace'. She is a poor lady and is married to a poor clerk. The story is about the ambition of the poor woman Matilda to appear as if she is rich. This show off by her leads to very detrimental consequences and suffering. This story is written by a French author Guy De Maupassant. It has been included in the syllabus of Class 10 English textbook foot prints.

📔Character Sketch of Matilda (Short Answer):-

Matilda was a beautiful young lady. She came from a poor family of clerks. She was even married to a poor clerk. However her husband was caring. Matilda always wanted to live a life like rich people; full of luxuries. But, she felt sorry about her economic and social status.

When she got an invitation to ball party, she refused to go there. As, she wanted to look rich but she did not had expensive clothes. She somehow convinced her caring husband to buy her a new dress. But, even then she lacked a necklace. Her husband suggest her to borrow a necklace from her friend. So, she borrowed a necklace for a day for party.

But, she lost that necklace at the party. And this lead to extreme suffering and sorrow for Matilda and her husband. They had to live in poverty for almost ten years.

Matilda was of a showy nature. She aspired to look rich and show-off things that she didn't had. She loved the luxurious lives of rich women. And this envy of her presents detrimental consequences before her. Had she known the importance of living a simple life, she would not have suffered.

    Character Sketch of Monsieur Loisel :

    Mr. Loisel is a simple man, who works as a clerk. He lives a simple life with limited means. But he does not complain about it.

    Mr. Loisel loves his wife and does everything to make her happy. However, his wife Matilda is not content with her life. She wants to live a life with extravagance and luxury.

    When mr. Loisel gets an invitation to a ball with his wife, his wife wants a costly necklace. He suggests she should borrow a necklace from her rich friend, Madame Forestier. When Matilda loses her necklace, he puts his hard-earned savings to buy a new necklace and becomes indebted. 

    Mr. Loisel works very hard to repay the debt they had incurred. He is ready to make an enormous sacrifice to maintain his family. He is a man who believes in living a life within one’s means. Unfortunately, because he is lenient towards his wife, he has to undergo much suffering.

She suffered poverty both at her parents' home and at her husband's. She felt sad about her petty social and economic status. She wanted to lead a rich life full of extravagance. She was kind of a person who looks at others for confirmation.

    Matilda always wanted to look as if she is wealthy. She envied rich women for their luxurious life. When she got an invitation to a party at ball, She wanted to look pretty and rich in the party. She is a woman who sought others' admiration and praise. She was a tactful lady. She convinced her husband to buy her a pretty new dress just by refusing to go to the party.

    Matilda was of a showy nature. She loved delicacies and luxuries. Even after buying a dress she lacked a necklace. So, she convinced her husband to borrow a necklace for the party. She wanted to be noticed by the other people. She felt joy when praised for her beauty.

    Matilda ia a woman who lacked wisdom and prudence. Just to show off a day at ball, she borrowed an expensive necklace. But at the party she loses that necklace. She repented for the lose of necklace. But there is no point repenting now as the necklace was lost. She had to suffer a lot, almost ten years, to replace that borrowed necklace with a new one. She always remained in distress.

    It is only at the last that she gets to know that the necklace she borrowed was a duplicate and a copy of the real expensive necklace. Her husband and she suffered for years, replacing that false necklace with a genuine expensive necklace. It would not have happened if she had known the importance of living a simple life without any show-off.
