1. What makes writing in a diary a strange experience for Anne Frank?

Answer : The thing that made diary writing an strange experience for Anne Frank were:- 
Firstly, she had never written anything like this earlier and secondly, she thought that anyways nobody is going to read her diary or would be interested in her daily routine writings.

2. Why does Anne want to keep a diary?

Answer: Anne Frank wanted to keep a diary as she didn’t had friend whom she could talk to. She also wished to have a friend whom she could have any type of conversation like typical friend do. So, the easier way was to maintain a diary where she could write her thoughts.

3. Why did Anne think she could confide more in her diary than in people?

Answer: Anne could have confided in her close friend but she didn’t have one. The friends that she had there were to have more fun and good times rather than the ones on whom Anne could confide. 
Anne also believed that a paper have more patience than a people, which could listen to her inconsistent thoughts more patiently. So, she decided to write and confide in a diary.

1. Why does Anne provide a brief sketch of her life?

Answer: Anne provides a brief sketch of her life as without that it would be difficult for anyone to understand a single word of her musings if she were to jump right in.

2. What tells you that Anne loved her grandmother?

Answer: Anne loved he grandmother more than Anyone else. Her love is evident from her statement that no one could understand her intensity of love for her grandma. Moreover, her description of the gesture of lighting up one candle for her grandmother during Anne’s birthday is also a reminder of the love for grandma.

1. Why was Mr Keesing annoyed with Anne? What did he ask her to do?

Answer: Mr. Keesing was Anne's teacher. He was annoyed with Anne as she talked very much in the class. So, he assigned her extra homework as a punishment. He asked her to write an essay on the subject, ‘A Chatterbox’. But, the imagination of Anne in this essay impressed him.

2. How did Anne justify her being a chatterbox in her essay?

Answer: Anne was assigned to write an essay on topic 'Chatterbox', because she talked to much. But in this essay itself she justified her being a chatterbox. She gave two arguments, one, that chatting is students' traits and other reason that nothing can be done about the inherited traits.

3. Do you think Mr Keesing was a strict teacher?

Answer: However, Mr. Keesing was a strict teacher, he was not rigidly strict. He was a typical traditional teacher who expected discipline and silence in his class while he was teaching. As Anne talked very much in the class, he punished her by asking her to write an essay on ‘A Chatterbox’. When Anne wrote a convincing essay on it and justified her being a chatterbox, Mr. Keesing received it with a good laugh. However, when Anne continued with her talking, he punished her again by asking her to write another essay; this time the topic was ‘An Incorrigible Chatterbox’.

Even then when she kept talking, he asked her to write on the topic ‘Quack Quack Quack, said Mistress Chatterbox'. He was trying to play a joke on Anne. However, when she came up with a brilliant poem, he read this poem in the class, recognising the content in essay and her talent. Therefore, we can not label Mr. Keesing as an entirely strict teacher. He was fun-loving too and he acknowledged the talent.

4. What made Mr Keesing allow Anne to talk in class?

Ans: Anne was punished thrice for her talkative nature. But, each time she was able to justify it. On three occasions, as punishments, Anne was given topics to write essays on by Mr. Keesing. However, on each occasion she had impressed her teacher by her arguments. Finally, Mr. Keesing accepted the fact that Anne would always be of talkative nature. Hence, he allowed her to talk in class.

Thinking about the Text

1. Was Anne right when she said that the world would not be interested in the musings of a thirteen-year-old girl?

Answer: Anne was a teenager. She had no friends whom she could share her thoughts. So, she started writing the diary. However, Anne thought that no one would be interested in her writing. But, she was not right in this regard. As, her diary became quite famous.

2. Why does Anne need to give a brief sketch about her family? Does she treat ‘Kitty’ as an insider or an outsider?

Answer: Anne Frank claims that she writes diary because a paper has more patience than people. She usually feels depressed and alone. She claims that she has no real friend. This may lend the reader the perception that there is no one to take care of Anne Frank. To clear this perception, Anne Frank gives the sketch of her father, compassionate mother, kind grandmother, and a loving sister.
She treats Kitty as an insider as she called it her best friend and was ready to confide in it.

4. How does Anne feel about her father, her grandmother, Mrs Kuperus and Mr Keesing? What do these tell you about her?

Answer: Anne Frank gives the description of different people and what she feels regarding them. 
She felt that her father was the most adorable father she had ever seen.
Anne loved her grandmother the most. She remembered her even after her death. She often thought of her grandmother and write about her in her diary.
In the sixth form at the Montessori nursery school, her teacher was Mrs Kuperus, who was also the headmistress. At the end of the year, they were both in tears as they said a heartbreaking farewell.

Mr Keesing was her Maths teacher. He was annoyed with her because she talked too much. However, Anne was able to justify her talkative nature every time she was punished by Mr. Keesing. On each occasion he was impressed by the manner in which she presented her arguments.
All these incidents show how lovable and smart Anne was. Everybody was attached to her, and even Mr Keesing could not help but laugh at her essays and acknowledge her smart mind.

5. What does Anne write in her first essay?

Answer:
As Anne Frank talked a lot in the class, Mr. Keesing asked her to write an essay on the topic ‘A Chatterbox’ as a punishment. She wrote a good essay on the topic. In the essay, she accepted the drawbacks of being talkative. However, she also argued that it was in her genetics as her mother was also very talkative. Not to talk in the classroom was a difficult practice. And it was also not a student’s trait. Even, Mr Keesing laughed at the argument she had given and he was impressed.

Question 6. Anne says teachers are most unpredictable. Is Mr Keesing unpredictable?

Answer:
Anne was perfect about her opinion on Mr Keesing as an unpredictable teacher. Initially Mr Keesing punished Anne for her talkative nature. He was indifferent towards Anne's behaviour. However, when he read Anne's essay on the topic 'A Chatterbox', he was impressed by her arguments. He also laughed after reading it and he allowed Anne to talk in the class.

Question 7. What do these statements tell you about Anne Frank as a person?

1. We don’t seem to be able to get any closer and that’s the problem. Maybe it’s my fault that we don’t confide in each other.

2. I don’t want, to jot down the facts in this diary the way most people would, but I want the diary to be my friend.

3. Margot went to Holland in December and I followed in February, when I was plunked down on the table as a birthday present for Margot.

4. If you ask me, there are so many dummies that about a quarter of the class should be kept back, but teachers are the most unpredictable creatures on Earth.

5. Anyone could ramble on and leave big spaces between the words, but the trick was to come up with convincing arguments to prove the necessity of talking.
